Health and Safety Mini Conference in Wamego

Join us for our Health and Safety Mini Conference in Wamego. This mini conference will offer two separate tracks for participants to choose from. Please click on the tabs below for a detailed description of each course. 
Track One includes three sessions featuring six different Health & Safety classes. Participants will choose one class per session, for a total of six clock hours of training.
Track Two offers a Heartsaver CPR AED course with a certification card valid for two years upon successful completion. No in-service hours will be issued.

Happy Meals: Safe Food Practices and Allergy Awareness
Participants will learn safe food practices including sanitary preparation, meal service and proper food storage. Participants will also learn how to prepare meals for a child who has food allergies and how to respond to an allergic reaction due to food.

This class meets 2 of the 4 hours of the Annual Health and Safety Topic Requirements. Funded in partnership by Kansas Department for Children and Families, Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities and Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas. This class is being offered as part of a health and safety mini conference. The fee for the event is $10.00.  There is not a separate fee for individual classes.

Medication Administration in Child Care
Administering medication in the child care setting can be confusing and time consuming. Participants will learn the risks of administering medication, prevention for mistakes and methods for effective administration.

This class meets 2 of the 4 hours of the Annual Health and Safety Topic Requirements. Funded in partnership by Kansas Department for Children and Families, Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities and Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas. Wrestling with Safe Sleep
Explore SIDS and SUID data including high risk populations and barriers to safe infant sleep. Sleep location, position, and environmental recommendations based on the 2022 American Academy of Pediatrics Safe Sleep Guidelines are discussed. PowerPoint, small group discussion and lecture format is used.

Healthy Environments: Disease Prevention and Control
Participants will learn the causes of infectious disease in child care, principles of disease control, as well as how to prevent the spread of infectious disease including sanitation procedures, handwashing and diapering techniques and how to provide a safe, healthy environment for children.

This class meets 2 of the 4 hours of the Annual Health and Safety Topic Requirements. Funded in partnership by Kansas Department for Children and Families, Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities and Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas. Keeping Children Safe: Environment and Transportation Safety
Participants will learn how to provide a safe physical environment for children by identifying potential hazards which include the handling and storage of hazardous materials, appropriate disposal of biocontaminants and the appropriate transportation precautions with children.

Basic Child Development
Upon completion of this professional development event participants will appreciate the principles and influences of child growth and development and recognize that child development is individual. This session addresses the four domains of child development and identifies benchmarks for each area of development for birth through six years for age.

Heartsaver FA/CPR
Heartsaver CPR AED is geared for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years. This course will cover adult, child, and infant CPR with AED and meets requirements for KDHE licensed child care providers. Please dress comfortably and be prepared for bending, kneeling, and physical movement.
